Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning: What's the Difference?

Wasatch Cleaners October 19, 2026 6 min read
Short answer

A regular cleaning keeps a home that is already clean in good shape: counters, bathrooms, floors and reachable dusting. A deep cleaning resets a home that has built up grime: baseboards, cabinet fronts, hard-water scale, fan blades, vents and floor edges. Book a deep clean for a first visit, or if no professional has cleaned in 60 days or more. After that, regular visits keep it there.

This question usually comes up before guests arrive or before a first booking. The two services sound alike, but they are built for different homes. One maintains a clean baseline. The other creates it. This guide lays out exactly what changes between them in a Salt Lake Valley home, how much more work a deep clean is, and how to tell which one your home needs today.

Deep cleaning vs regular cleaning, side by side

At Wasatch Cleaners a regular visit is called a Maintenance Clean and a deep visit is called a Deep Detail Clean. The table uses our published checklist, the same one our crews work from.

What a deep clean adds that a regular clean skips

The difference is not a stronger spray. It is time spent on surfaces that a regular visit is not built to reach every week:

  • Baseboards and door frames, wiped by hand instead of passed with a vacuum
  • Grease film on the hood, backsplash and cabinet fronts around the stove
  • Hard-water scale on shower doors, faucets and drains
  • Fan blades, air vents, picture frames and the tops of ledges
  • The floor edge behind the toilet and along every wall
  • Table and chair legs, switch plates, railings

In Utah, two of these matter more than most places. Hard water leaves scale on shower glass and fixtures, and winter dust settles on vents and ledges that a regular visit does not always reach. A deep clean removes that layer so regular visits can keep up with it.

Which one does your home need?

Choose a deep clean if any of these are true: it is your first professional clean, the last one was 60 or more days ago, you can see grime on baseboards or the hood, there is scale on the shower glass, or you are getting ready for guests, a new baby or a move.

Choose a regular clean if a professional cleaned the home in the last 30 to 45 days and you want to keep it that way.

We require a deep clean for a first visit to a home that has not had a professional clean in 60 days or more. That is not an upsell. A regular visit is timed for a home at a clean baseline. Without that baseline, the crew runs out of time before the job is done, and nobody is happy with the result.

How the two fit together

Deep and regular cleaning work best as a pair. Start with one deep clean to set the baseline, then book regular visits every week, every two weeks or monthly. Recurring visits are priced lower than one-time visits. On a regular schedule you can add baseboards or the inside of the oven as add-ons when you want them, instead of booking another full deep clean.

If you are not sure how often your home needs a deep clean, our guide on how often to deep clean your home covers it by household type. For full price detail by home size, see what house cleaning costs in Salt Lake City.

What neither service includes

Some jobs are outside both services, and it helps to know before you book: inside the oven, fridge and cabinets, and interior windows are add-ons you pick at booking. Full wall washing, carpet shampoo, exterior windows, construction dust and heavy restoration work are quoted separately. Ceiling fans and fixtures out of step-stool reach are not included. For an empty home, a deep clean is the wrong tool; a move-in or move-out clean covers cabinet and drawer interiors instead.

Questions people ask

Is a deep clean worth it before switching to regular cleaning?

Yes, if the home has not been professionally cleaned in about two months. A regular visit is timed to maintain a clean baseline. Without that baseline, built-up grime on baseboards, hoods and shower glass never gets fully removed.

How much longer does a deep clean take than a regular clean?

A deep clean takes roughly one and a half to two times the crew time of a regular clean for the same home, because baseboards, cabinet fronts, vents and floor edges are done by hand.

Does a deep clean include baseboards?

Yes. A deep clean includes hand-wiping baseboards in visible areas throughout the home. On a regular clean, a full-home baseboard wipe is an add-on you can choose at booking.

Does a deep clean include the inside of the oven and fridge?

Not by default. Inside the oven, inside the fridge, cabinet interiors and interior windows are add-ons you can choose when you book, for either service.

Do I need a deep clean before moving out?

Usually not. An empty home needs a move-out clean, which covers empty cabinet and drawer interiors, closets and every room for the walkthrough. A deep clean is designed for a home that is still lived in.
