Move-In Cleaning Checklist for an Empty Home

Wasatch Cleaners October 26, 2026 6 min read
Short answer

A move-in cleaning checklist covers an empty home from the top down: dust ceiling fixtures and vents, wipe cabinet and drawer interiors, clean appliances inside and out, scrub bathrooms, and finish with floors. Do it before a single box crosses the threshold, while every surface is still reachable. An empty home takes half the effort and gives you a clean baseline for everything you unpack. The checklist below walks room by room, plus a first-night kit for day one.

The right time to clean a new home is the day you get the keys, before the truck arrives. Empty rooms are fast to work in, and hidden surfaces are still reachable. This checklist works top to bottom so nothing gets cleaned twice.

The order that saves you time

Work high to low, from the back of the house toward the front door. Dust falls, so floors come last. If more than one person helps, split by zone and keep the same order.

  • Ceiling fixtures, reachable fans, vents and detectors, dusted
  • Walls, switch plates, door frames and closet shelves, wiped top to bottom
  • Cabinet and drawer interiors in kitchen and baths, vacuumed then washed
  • Appliances: fridge and freezer, oven, dishwasher, microwave, inside and out
  • Bathrooms: tub, shower, toilet, sink, mirror, exhaust fan cover
  • Windowsills, tracks and interior glass, if the walkthrough left them
  • Floors last: vacuum edges and corners, then mop room by room

Step stools are fine for reachable fixtures. Anything needing a tall ladder or electrical work is a job for a pro.

Inside cabinets, closets and drawers

Empty storage is the reason to clean before you move. Vacuum cabinet and drawer boxes first so grit does not smear when you wipe, then wash with a mild cleaner and dry fully before lining. Do not forget cabinet tops, the pantry floor, closet shelves and the linen closet before towels go in.

If the previous owner left shelf liner, peel it off and clean the residue rather than layering new over old adhesive. Test removers on a hidden spot and follow the maker's care instructions.

Kitchen and appliances

The kitchen gets the most attention because food is stored and prepared there from day one.

Appliance or surfaceWhat to do before it fills up
Refrigerator and freezerRemove shelves and drawers, wash and dry before reinstalling, wipe interior walls and the door gasket, leave the door open to air out
Oven and rangeClean the interior, racks, stovetop and removable hood filter; run a short empty cycle afterward to burn off residue, with windows open
DishwasherPull and rinse the filter, wipe door edges and gasket, run one empty hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack
MicrowaveSteam a bowl of water with lemon inside for a few minutes, then wipe the interior and turntable
Sinks and countersScrub the basin, polish the faucet, degrease the backsplash and sanitize counters before any food lands
Cabinet and drawer interiorsVacuum crumbs first, then wash, dry and line shelves

Bathrooms: start from a truly clean slate

Bathrooms deserve a reset, not a wipe-down, since you do not know their last deep clean. Scrub the tub, shower walls, door or curtain track and fixtures, working hard-water scale off faucets and shower glass. Wash the toilet inside, outside, at the base and behind, then the sink, counter and mirror. Pull the exhaust fan cover, wash it and vacuum the vent. Finish with the floor, including behind the toilet, then run hot water for a few minutes to flush the lines.

Utah note: Wasatch Front water is hard, and an empty home often sits through a listing while scale and soap scum build undisturbed. Soak shower glass, faucets and the toilet rim ring with a descaling cleaner before scrubbing, never mix bleach with acidic descalers, and test products on a hidden spot first. Dry the glass after the first few showers and new scale never gets a start.

The first-night kit

You will not want to unpack ten boxes to find toilet paper at 11 pm. Pack one labeled bin that travels with you, not on the truck, and keep it out of the cleaning zone.

  • Bedding and pillows for every bed, so everyone sleeps on clean linens
  • Toiletries, toilet paper, hand soap, towels and a shower curtain if needed
  • A basic tool kit, flashlight, box cutter and trash bags
  • Paper plates, utensils, a coffee maker and snacks for the first morning
  • Phone chargers, medications, pet food and a change of clothes
  • Cleaning basics for touch-ups: spray, paper towels and a sponge

When it makes sense to hand it off

A DIY move-in clean takes most people a full day, and it competes with a moving truck on a schedule. A professional move-in clean sends a crew with supplies and a written room-by-room checklist, including cabinet, appliance and closet interiors. Wasatch Cleaners prices move-in cleans flat by home size, never by the hour, with an instant price online at our booking page. We bring supplies, send photo proof of key rooms, and if a checklist item is missed, tell us within 24 hours with photos and we return to re-clean it.

Plan your move-in clean

Questions people ask

Should I clean before or after moving furniture in?

Always before. An empty home lets you reach cabinet interiors, closet floors, the space behind the toilet and every floor edge without moving furniture. Once boxes and beds arrive, those surfaces stay hidden.

What if the seller already had the home professionally cleaned?

Still check. A listing clean focuses on what buyers see, and cabinets, appliances and bathrooms can be skipped. Open every cabinet and look inside the oven and fridge before deciding what needs attention.

What cleaning supplies do I need for a move-in clean?

A vacuum with attachments, microfiber cloths, a mop, an all-purpose cleaner, a bathroom cleaner, a hard-water descaler, glass cleaner and paper towels, plus stools, trash bags and gloves. Never mix bleach with ammonia or acids.

How long does a move-in clean take?

It depends on the size and condition of the home. Many people budget a full day for a house they clean themselves, and less for an apartment. A fixed order, ceilings first and floors last, keeps you from redoing finished rooms.
